Make your Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a document that allows you to nominate a person or group of people to make decisions on your behalf should you no longer be able to do so.

This is an extremely useful precaution to have in place should you be unwell after a sudden illness or accident, or if you were to be diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. An LPA should be put in place long before you expect to need it.

Why we recommend creating a combined Lasting Power of Attorney?

We always advise our clients to make a combined Lasting Power of Attorney to cover both health and care, and property and financial decisions.
This is because:

  • Your representatives will be able to fully support you

By giving your representatives the right to make decisions about both the health and care you receive and what happens with your property and finances, you’ll ensure they are able to take care of everything you may need them to.

  • Your family will gain greater protection

If you don’t make an LPA to grant them the necessary legal permission, your loved ones won’t be able to make decisions on your behalf should you no longer be able to do so. A combined LPA will protect everyone’s best interests.

What do you need to make a Lasting Power of Attorney?

  • Your details

To get started you’ll need your personal information such as your name, address and date of birth.

  • Identification

During the LPA making process you’ll need to upload two forms of identification. Alternatively, you can choose to email or post your identification to us.

  • Information about your chosen attorneys

When you make an LPA, you appoint family members or friends to act as your attorneys should the need arise. You will need the names, addresses and dates of birth of the people you have chosen.

  • Your preferences and instructions

You will have the opportunity within your LPA to share details of your preferences and instructions for how you would prefer your attorneys to act.

  • A certificate provider

In order for your LPA to be valid, it will need to be signed by a certificate provider. When we send your finished LPA we will provide full guidance on who can fulfil this role.
